Portraits at the Stock Exchange ca. 1878-79 Edgar Degas French Degas presents a glimpse of the busy commerce under the portico of the Paris stock exchange. Financier and art collector Ernest May (1845-1925), wearing spectacles, receives a document for perusal, as an associate, identified as Monsieur Boltre, leans over his shoulder. The artist made this pastel as a study for an oil painting of 1878-79 (Musée dOrsay, Paris). At the time, May was in his early thirties, and just beginning to expand his acquisitions from seventeenth- and eighteenth-century pictures to works by Degas, Manet, and their colleagues.. The fashionable woman seated in the foreground is the artist's sister, Edma. However, the painting is not a portrait. Morisot's principal concern was to render a figure in a natural, outdoor environment. Edma's white dress-the prime vehicle for Morisot's study of reflected light-is saturated with delicate lavender, blue, yellow, and rose tonalitites. Deftly executed with quick brushstrokes, the painting resounds with a feeling of freshness, vibrancy and delicate charm. Tea 1872 James Tissot French When Tissot moved to London in 1871, he immersed himself in the local scene, with work for Vanity Fair and genre paintings with the river Thames as backdrop. This canvas is a repetition of the left-hand portion of one of his most famous London pictures, Bad News (National Museum of Wales, Cardiff), which shows a captain and his girlfriend absorbing the news of his imminent departure while a companion prepares tea, with the Pool of London in the background. Impressionist painter, douard Manet often captured caf scenes depicting social life at the end of the nineteenth century as depicted in this painting, The Caf-Concert. The setting has been identified as the Brasserie Reichshoffen on the Boulevard Rochechouart. Manet shows us men and women in the new brasseries and cafes of Paris, which presents the viewer with an alternate view of new Parisian life. Manet claimed he was painting 'des oeuvres sinceres' or 'sincere works'. The women depicted in these scenes were courting certain risks with regards to perception and morality. In, The Caf-Concert, Manet presents a caf-concert in which three central figures form a triangle but are all engaged in opposite directions. The scene of a caf-concert should be casual but Manet hints at separation.
