On Happiness, Calligraphy in Seal Script Style (zhuanshu), 1871. Yang Yisun (Chinese, 1813-1881). Hanging scroll, ink on paper; overall: 132.7 x 32.3 cm (52 1/4 x 12 11/16 in.). Yang Yisun transcribed this ancient text on six narrow scrolls, starting at the top right and ending at the bottom left. Yang emphasizes the texts historic nature by using the seal script style found on stone steles and bronze vessels. On Happiness features reflections of a scholar on a leisurely life in the countryside, composed by Han dynasty official Zhongchang Tong, who died the year the Han dynasty collapsed (AD 220). The idyllic life described in the text may bean evocation of the past in a time of national crisis. A decade before Yang wrote these scrolls, Anglo-French forces had looted and burned the Summer Palace in Beijing. At the same time, the domestic Taiping rebellion (1850-64), led by a religious fanatic to overthrow the Qing government, had devastated Yangs homeland, the Jiangnan region, with

Waka poems from the Collection of Poems of a Thousand Years, Continued 1651 Calligraphy by Kojima Sshin The elegantly brushed calligraphy on lavish decorated paper transcribes a series of classical waka poems from the Collection of Poems of a Thousand Years, Continued (Zoku senzai wakash), an augmented fourteenth century version of the Senzai sh imperially-commissioned poetry anthology (ca. 1187/8). Inscribed in according to the conventions of chirashi-gaki, or “scattered writing” (with vertical lines of text beginning at different heights), on this silk handscroll decorated with horizontal bands of gold mist and small clusters of flowers and rocks. Brushed in flowing kana (Japanese syllabic characters) interspersed with kanji (Chinese characters), the poetic text is followed by the signature and two seals of Kojima Sshin, a student of the renowned calligrapher Hon’ami Ketsu (1558-1637), one of the founders of the Rinpa school. Section of The Amitabha Sutra mid-13th century Unidentified The Amida Sutra (Sanskrit: Sukhavativyuha Sutra), one of two Mahayana Buddhist scriptural texts that describe the beautiful Pure Land paradise of Amida (Sanskrit: Amitabha) Buddha, was inscribed in alternating lines of gold and silver inks on a paper repeatedly soaked in a dark blue indigo dye intended to resemble the color of precious lapis lazuli. This style of sutra transcription was popular from the twelfth through the fourteenth century, when wealthy patrons commissioned richly executed sutra scrolls such as this as offerings to temples, in the hope of gaining spiritual merit. It was a commonly held belief that the copying of sacred texts improved ones chance to achieve salvation, and patrons supplied artists with expensive and valuable materials with which to work, in lieu of copying the texts themselves. Once they had been dedicated to a temple, scrolls of this quality were stored in sutra repositories and rarely used;

Nigatsud Burned Sutra ca. 744 Unidentified artist This fragment of the Flower Garland Sutra (Kegonky) comes from a set of sixty handscrolls donated to the temple Tdaiji in Nara in 744. Damaged by a fire at the temple’s Nigatsud Hall, the surviving sections are known today as Nigatsud Burned Sutras (Nigatsud yakegy). The scripture’s singed edges, capturing the Buddhist idea that everything is impermanent, has made these remnants especially prized.Such fragments also represent some of the earliest surviving examples of the practice of transcribing Buddhist texts using precious materials. The copying of religious writings was thought to confer spiritual merit on all those involved in the project, including the donors, scribes, and craftsmen who prepared the materials, and so was done in great numbers during this period.The characters are written in a special form of “regular script” (kaisho) that, while written quickly, is balanced and even, with each stroke clearly visible to maxi

The Tea Horse Road (Cha Ma Dao) was a network of mule caravan paths winding through the mountains of Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet in Southwest China. It is also sometimes referred to as the Southern Silk Road and Ancient Tea and Horse Road. From around a thousand years ago, the Ancient Tea Route was a trade link from Yunnan, one of the first tea-producing regions, to India via Burma, to Tibet, and to central China via Sichuan Province. In addition to tea, the mule caravans carried salt. It is believed that it was through this trading network that tea (typically tea bricks) first spread across China and Asia from its presumed origins in Pu'er county, near Simao Prefecture in Yunnan.
