Gathering Berries (from "Harper's Weekly," Vol. XVIII) July 11, 1874 After Winslow Homer American In 1857 Winslow Homer began his eighteen-year career working as an illustrator for Harpers Weekly, which launched in New York in the same year. The publication was one of the most successful examples of an illustrated weekly, a type of magazine dominated by images rather than text. Weeklies could be printed quickly, cheaply, and in large quantities thanks to recent advances in wood-engraving technology, in which an image was translated onto a wood block and then cast electrolytically from a wax mold. After working as a freelance illustrator during the early years of his career, Homer was hired by Harpers as a full-time correspondent upon the outbreak of the American Civil War (1861-65). The caption for this illustration, which dates to around 1865, reads: as soon as he found himself alone between the sky and the water, he abandoned himself to a sort of noisy joy. The boy here is Benjamn Franklin and the year is 1715 and Franklin is eight or nine. He, so the story goes, was accustomed to go swimming every evening in Boston Roads, near where he lived. He would swim offshore and often head for a barge temporarily abandoned by its owners and practice steering . You can see the boat there.

In 1812, the Grimm brothers, Jacob and Wilhelm, published Children and Household Tales, a collection German fairy tales. This illustration accompanied the tale of Snow White. Here, the dwarfs in grief watch over Snow White after they have placed her in a glass coffin after eating a poisoned apple the Queen gave her. This image is from Grimms Eventyr (Grimm's Fairy Tales) by Carl Ewald, published in 1922. The frontispiece has the illustrations by Philip Grot Johann and R. Leinweber. Johann was a well-known German illustrator and did pieces for Goethe, but he considered his pieces for Grimm's tales very important. He died young and Leinweber succeeded him as illustrator for later editions of the tales.
