***** Former Carrie -- The 7000-ton Italian migrant ship Fairsea, a recently converted United States aircraft carrier, berthed at Port Melbourne yesterday with 1896 displaced persons, 457 of whom are children. Among 13 nationalities represented were 31 White Russians, fleeing from Communist controlled Europe. Fairsea was a gay sight as she approached the wharf bedecked with flags to celebrate her maiden voyage. June 17, 1949.

"Mauretania" Launched - The "Mauretania" entering the River Mersey after the launching ceremony.The Cunard White Star liner "Mauretania" was launched to-day from Messrs. Cammell Laird's yard at Birkenhead, Liverpool, by Lady Bates, wife of Sir Percy Bates, Chairman of the Cunard Co. The "Maurestania", which is expected to be registered as a 34,000-ton ship, is the largest vessel built in an England yard, and has been brought to the launching stage in the record time of 14 months. She will exceed her famous predecessor by more than 3,000 tons . A ceremony believed to be unprecedented in the history of British shipyards was performed before the launching. July 28, 1938.
