This illustration of Alice climbing up on the fireplace mantel and about to poke the looking glass (mirror) is from "Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There" by Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), who wrote this novel in 1871 as a sequel to "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." Alice does step through the mirror into another world.
