Life in Camp, Part 1: Stuck in the Mud After Winslow Homer American Publisher Louis Prang & Co. American 1864 In 1864 Homer designed two series of lithographed collectors cards titled Life in Camp for the Boston publisher Louis Prang & Co. Unlike his serious war-time images for Harpers Weekly, the artist felt free to inject humor into these miniature comments on army life which include images of soldiers resting, eating and reacting to army life. Here, a soldier at the rear of a marching regiment falls back into muddy water. By 1864 the war was entering its final months and formerly sacrosanct subjects could be approached more lightly.

The Paris Commune was established when the citizens of Paris, many of them armed National Guards, rebelled against the policies of the conservative government formed after the end of the Franco-Prussian War. The left-wing regime of the Commune held sway in Paris for two months until government troops retook the city in bloody fighting in May 1871. The events of the Commune were an inspiration to Karl Marx as well as later communist leaders including Lenin, Trotsky and Mao. From a private collection.

Daniel Boone (1734-1820) was an American frontiersman who was born in Reading, Pennsylvania. In March of 1775, as advance agent for Transylvania Co., he blazed Wilderness Road and founded Boonesboro (also spelled Boonesborough) on Kentucky River. He was captured by Indians in 1778, but he escaped and moved to Missouri after land titles in Kentucky were invalidated. His adventures became well-known through the so-called autobiographical account by John Filson. The caption for this illustration reads: Escape of Boone and Death of Stuart. The Last Ditch of the Chivalry, or a President in Petticoats 1865 Currier & Ives During the closing days of the American Civil War Northern satirists often showed the defeated Confederate President Jefferson Davis trying to slip through enemy lines wearing women's clothing. After Robert E. Lee surrended on April 9, 1865, Davis evaded capture for a month, pursued by Union troops who believed he had plotted the assassination of President Lincoln. On May 10th he was finally arrested in Georgia wearing his wife's overcoat, thrown on as he rushed out of the house. Northern tabloids embellished this detail to described Davis in a dress, inspiring prints like this one. Challenge Southern claims of gallantry and chivarly, the image echoes a popular song titled "Jeff in Petticoats." Here, the subject carries a bag of gold as he runs from Union soliders who have recognized their quarry by his boots.
