Diagram depicts the importance of cell-cell communication as central to the understanding of cancer growth and progression, the focus of the NASA bioreactor demonstration system (BDS-05) investigation. Microgravity studies will allow us to unravel the signaling and communication between these cells with the host and potential development of therapies for the treatment of cancer metastasis. The NASA Bioreactor provides a low turbulence culture environment which promotes the formation of large, three-dimensional cell clusters. Due to their high level of cellular organization and specialization, samples constructed in the bioreactor more closely resemble the original tumor or tissue found in the body. The Bioreactor is rotated to provide gentle mixing of fresh and spent nutrient without inducing shear forces that would damage the cells. Cytokine storm and inflammatory response localized in the pulmonary alveoli. This medical illustration shows on the upper side the normal immune response when a virus (in red and yellow) penetrates into the alveoli of the lungs. While the lower part of the illustration represents an abnormal reaction that triggers a cytokine storm. In the normal reaction, the cytokines (light green beads) produced by macrophages (in green) when the virus arrives in the alveolus stimulate the inflammatory response. They also stimulate the multiplication of immune cells. Thus T lymphocytes (in purple) and macrophages destroy viruses. Then the transfer of oxygen to the blood system is almost normal. The body has several responses to this problem: - it repairs the gene, the cell is healthy again and can duplicate itself. - it destroys the cell whose gene is too altered (apoptosis) - if the gene is too altered and the gene sequence that triggers apoptosis is itself altered, the cell is not destroyed. It is a cancerous cell which will duplicate itself and form a primary tumor (localized cancer) which can release metastases which will contaminate other organs via the blood.
