Bowl last quarter 12th- early 13th century Mina'i wares were called haft rang, or seven colors, because several colors were employed in their decoration. Not all the pigments were applied using the same technique, and gilding, as seen on this piece, was applied to enrich the object. The required steps made the production of objects like this bowl a long and risky process. This probably also explains the short life of the technique, known to have been employed only in the period from the last quarter of the 12th century to the first decades of the 13th century.The central scene shows a rider at hunt, holding a falcon on one hand and chasing a running hare. The central scene is surrounded by a band of sphinxes. Both are typical of courtly images found on minai and on coeval luster wares.. Bowl 446261

Dish with a Landscape ca. 1545-50 Jacopo da Pesaro This is one of the grandest examples known today of a dish with a landscape scene rendered in blue-tinted glaze (berettino) and monochrome blue decoration. Painters and printmakers in sixteenth-century Venice established the landscape as an independent genre, and the subject was soon adopted in potteries. At the same time a taste developed for berettino wares, which were produced in several centers across Italy. The monochrome palette focuses attention on the painters ability to represent space, light and shadow. These effects are masterfully on display here, as the entire surface of the large dish supports the painted scene. Unlike the delicate Japanese Kakiemon style, the Imari style was bold and opulent. Maker: Artist sometimes signing FR, perhaps Fra Xanto Avelli da Rovigo (ca. 1486-1582). Date: ca. 1525.The painter has decorated the shallow, rimless bowl of this footed dish with a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses. The uninterrupted composition suggests that the bowl would have arrived at the table already laden (probably with fruit or sweetmeats), at first concealing the story. As diners consumed the treats, they would gradually reveal the sad tale of Actaeon, a hunter transformed into a stag as punishment for having glimpsed the goddess Diana at her bath. Plate 1791 Sèvres Manufactory French Porcelain decorated with a black ground in imitation of Asian lacquer was produced at Sèvres for about a fifteen-year period beginning in 1790. Furniture decorated with imported black lacquer panels saw a resurgence of popularity in the last two decades of the eighteenth century, and the Sèvres factory's efforts to simulate black lacquer on porcelain were probably stimulated by this renewed general interest in lacquer decoration. Black-ground Sèvres porcelain was decorated with chinoiserie scenes executed in gold, which was often applied in subtle tones of yellow, green, and red. Small decorative highlights were often executed in platinum, and the ability to apply platinumfirst mastered by the factory in 1790may have been an impetus to produce these lacquer-inspired pieces.[Jeffrey H.
