The accounts by official court historians and descriptions provided by visitors evoke a vibrant cultural center continually redefined by its leadership through shifting internal and external power dynamics. According to oral tradition, circa 1300, Edo chiefs are reputed to have reached out to the leader of neighboring Ife, Oranmiyan, to establish a new divinely sanctioned royal dynasty. Since then, the investiture of Benins rulers to the title of obas has conferred upon them at once a role of chief priest officiating in important religious ceremonies and presiding over an elaborate structure of palace officials. During the fifteenth century reign of Oba Ewuare, Benins armies were formed and the fortification of its capital with a massive wall undertaken. Gheṇṭa (prayer bell) 11th century Javanese Dril buThe bell (dril bu) is the most common musical instrument associated with Tantric Buddhist ritual. Held in the left hand, the dril bu (clapper bell) is always paired with a scepter (dorje), which is held in the right. The scepter symbolizes method, bliss, and male aspects while the bell represents wisdom, emptiness, and the female aspects. Both principles are necessary to achieve Enlightenment. The bell handle traditionally matches in decoration the scepter it is paired with - often with five spokes or points (five representing the five forms of mystical wisdom). These bells were produced in Java, Indonesia, during the eleventh century. Buddhism flourished in Indonesia at that time, before Islam became dominant in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Phi Ta Khon or Pee Ta Khon (the Ghost Festival) is the name for a festival held annually in Dan Sai, Northeast Thailand. The events take place over three days some time between March and July, the dates being selected annually by the towns mediums. The Ghost Festival is also called Wan Ruam (assembly day). The towns residents invite protection from Phra U-pakut, the spirit of the Mun River. They then hold a series of games and take part in a procession wearing masks made of rice husks or coconut leaves with hats made from rice steamers, plus patchwork clothing. They also wear bells and wave wooden phalluses. Loei (Thai: ???) Province is located in Thailand's upper North-East.
