Kennedy marked the NASA Day of Remembrance with special ceremonies. This year the crew of Columbia was remembered in a special way on the day that marked the fifth anniversary of the Columbia accident.

Jimmy Doolittle and a team of 79 volunteer Raiders, from the 17th Bomber Group and 89th Reconnaissance Squadron, attempted what they called a suicide mission.” This secret mission was to lead a squadron of land-based B-52 bombers carrying maximum bomb loads taking-off from the USS Hornet. The Doolittle Raiders became the first to bombard Japan since the attack on Pearl Harbor. The Doolittle Raiders have celebrated their victory for the past 64 years.

The Wyoming National Guard partnered with the Veterans Commission to support Task Force Tribute in Cheyenne, Wyo., on Aug. 26, 2022. Task Force Tribute is a veteran-inspired journey across the U.S. honoring the 7,054 fallen service members during combat operations since 9/11. One mile is traveled for each service member lost.

The Honorable John McHugh, Secretary of the Army, addresses hundreds in attendance at an awards ceremony and memorial stone unveiling at Fort Hood, Texas Friday. Fifty-two Soldiers and civilians were honored for their efforts to aid the wounded in the wake of the Nov. 5, 2009 shooting at the installations Soldier Readiness Processing center. A memorial stone was dedicated to the Soldiers and civilians who lost their lives that day.

Decoy 81 was the call sign for a C-130 aircraft that crashed 30 years ago, killing all six crew on board.
