U.S. military service members, former prisoners of war, families and veterans gather for the National POW/MIA Recognition Day Ceremony at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Sept. 16, 2022. This day was first established in 1979 through a proclamation from President Jimmy Carter, in observance to honor and recognize the sacrifices of those Americans who have been prisoners of war and to remind the nation of those who are still missing in action. Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agencys mission is to achieve the fullest possible accounting for missing and unaccounted-for U.S. personnel to their families and our nation.

SAN DIEGO (April 10, 2013) Capt. Thomas Ishee, right, commander of Submarine Squadron (SUBRON) 11; Vicki Billings, daughter of Lt. Cmdr. John Hilary Billings, one of the 129 men who died aboard the U.S. Navy submarine USS Thresher (SSN 593); and other members of the official party render honors as Musician 1st Class Christopher Hodges, from Tuscaloosa, Ala., plays "Taps," during a memorial service for the 50th anniversary of the loss of Thresher. The ceremony honored the 129 men lost on Thresher, which sank off the coast of Cape Cod on April 10, 1963 during sea trials.

The ceremony was hosted by the Hampton Roads Naval Museum. Captain Scheneman served aboard the Battleship from 1988 to 1991 during Wisconsins reactivation and subsequent deployment to support Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm respectively.

DPAA and attending family members paid their respects and honored the life of U.S. Navy Water Tender 1st Class Oliver K. Burger, who was assigned to the USS Oklahoma when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft during World War II. Leadership from the center laid two wreaths to commemorate the historical events. The Battle of Midway is regarded as the turning point in the Pacific during World War II. The War of 1812, fought against Great Britain, was the last war fought on U.S. soil.

Following decommissioning, the ship is slated to be towed to the Navys Inactive Ships facility in Philadelphia, Pa., where it will be in a Logistical Support Asset status.

SYDNEY, Australia (Nov. 8, 2022) - Pathfinder-class oceanographic survey ship USNS Mary Sears (T-AGS 65) hosted U.S. Ambassador to Australia Caroline Kennedy during the ships scheduled visit to Sydney, Australia, on Nov 8, 2022. Ambassador Kennedy toured USNS Mary Sears and received a Naval Oceanography overview from Commander Jonathan Savage during her time onboard. The visit was Ambassador Kennedys first to an oceanographic survey vessel and her first visit to a U.S. Navy ship since taking office as U.S. Ambassador to Australia in July 2022. The namesake of USNS Mary Sears was born on 18 July 1905 in Wayland, Massachusetts. During World War II, Sears left her job as a research assistant at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) to join the war effort. As a Navy lieutenant in the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES), she was later appointed head of the Navy Hydrographic Offices new Oceanographic Unit where her research proved critical to the survivability of U.

Jason Dunham was deployed as part of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Jack Wilcox (at the microphone) answers questions from the media during a reunion with his rescuers at the Hangar AF docks, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. Wilcox reunited with the men aboard KSC's Freedom Star SRB retrieval ship that was in the vicinity when Wilcox suffered decompression sickness on a diving expedition 20 miles off shore in the Atlantic Ocean. When the Freedom Star team heard the call for help, they asked the Coast Guard if they could assist. The ship was out on a crane certification exercise and coincidentally had a diver medical technician and other divers training on the crane. The ship's divers were trained for the hyperbaric chamber on board. Upon reaching the Army dock, KSC Occupational Health physician Skip Beeler entered the chamber and continued the process of helping to stabilize Wilcox. After several hours in the chamber, Wilcox, who lives in Orlando, was airlifted to Florida Hospital Orlando.

YOKOSUKA, Japan (Oct. 16, 2022) - Capt. Leslie Sobol, Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka (CFAY) (right) and Larry Criner, N6 department head, look over Penny Pagan's set list at the 44th annual Friendship Day celebration. Nicolas Tobin, U.S. Navy Staff Chaplain, assigned to Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka, hands flowers to a service-veteran family member during a war memorial ceremony for the Japanese/POW(s) Friendship Program, Feb. 14, at Yokohama Commonwealth War Cemetery. The cemetery includes a large urn containing the ashes of 335 Sailors, Soldiers, and Airmen from the United States, the British Commonwealth, and the Kingdom of the Netherlands, who died as POWs in Japan. The ceremony is sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Commander, Navy Region Japan, bringing families of U.S. prisoners of war to Japan for a week-long reconciliation tour.
