Date: 1778.Fragonard excelled at portraying small children in images that capture their innocence and playfulness. Here, a charmingly disheveled child with blond curls rushes forward clutching his dolls while two tiny dogs try to pull one from his grasp. Using a wide range of marks, from hatching to wiggles to dots, Fragonard contrasts the sunlit paleness of the boy with a shadowy background. Although the model has not survived, other prints made in 1778 by the artist suggest that this etching is based on a brown wash drawing, in reverse direction and probably of larger dimensions than the print. His pupil, and sister-in-law, Marguerite Gérard also made an etching after the same model. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Pussy's Perquisite, from "Illustrated London News," Christmas Number December 2, 1882 Robert François Richard Brend'amour For its Christmas issue in 1882, the "Illustrated London News" chose a print devoted to the ever popular theme of children and pets, publishing Schutz's image of a girl dressed in 18th-century finery who pours milk or cream into a porcelain saucer for an expectant cat. The image echoes genre precedents by Joseph Wright of Derby, but the approach to historical revival--at once playful and sentimental--is distinctly Victorian. The title refers to the expectation of servants in wealthy households of a right to rich food not consumed at feasts. Study of a Boy in a Blue Jacket 1717 Benedetto Luti Italian Trained partly in Rome, where he settled in 1690, Luti enjoyed the patronage of Cosimo III de Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. He was admitted to the Accademia di San Luca in 1694 and elected its principal in 1720. In addition to being a painter, draftsman, and pastelist, Luti was a connoisseur, collector, and dealer. His pastels fall into three groups: portraits, bearded male heads thought to represent apostles, and studies from the model.
