Inscriptions on the Stone Drums (Eastern Zhou dynasty, 5th century B.C.) 17th century Unidentified artist Written Chinese evolved slowly over more than two millennia before arriving at a modern, "regular" script (kai shu) in the third century A.D. The oldest script type, known as "seal" script (zhuan shu), developed gradually during the Shang, Zhou, and Qin periods (ca. 1500-206 B.C.) and is characterized by curvilinear picturelike forms executed in strokes of even thickness.Inscriptions on the Ten Stone Drums, which record royal hunting expeditions, were probably engraved by one of the early dukes of the Qin state and constitute the earliest monumental seal-script texts of any length to survive. The script represents a transitional style between the "large-seal" script found on Shang and Zhou bronze vessels and the standardized "small-seal" script employed in official documents of the Qin dynasty (221-206 B.C.). Calligraphy in Semi-Cursive Style (xing-caoshu), 1600s. Yueshan Daozong (Chinese, 1629-1709). This spontaneous, bold calligraphy style is characteristic of members of the Japanese Obaku sect of Chan Buddhism (Huangbo in Chinese), which was introduced to Japan by Chinese monks in the 1600s. The monk Yueshan immigrated to Japan from the Chinese province of Fujian, taking a priestly post at Mampukuji, the headquarters of the Obaku sect in Japan. He later became the seventh abbot of the distinguished temple.Yueshans calligraphy features rounded characters that allow him to fuse strokes and characters in speedy brush movements. Here the text begins with the large character chu (“the beginning”), the initial focus of meditation on the text: The dragon murmurs after sunset. The tiger roars before dawn.

She thinks with deep regret of her youth to be confined in a palace, how she will miss her family, and her longing for freedom and happiness. Chu Nom is an obsolete writing system of the Vietnamese language. It makes use of Chinese characters (known as Han Tu in Vietnamese), and characters coined following the Chinese model. The earliest known example of Chu Nom dates to the 13th century. It was used almost exclusively by the Vietnamese elite, mostly for recording Vietnamese literature (formal writings were, in most cases, not done in Vietnamese, but in classical Chinese). It has almost been completely replaced by Quoc Ngu, a script based on the Latin alphabet.

(23.5 × 16.2 × 2.5 cm). When important individuals died during the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), they were commemorated in lengthy epitaphs that were inscribed on durable surfaces for posterity. This set of fourteen plaques (we are showing only part of the set) records the biography and family history of a celebrated poet, Park Eun (1479-1504), and even includes examples of his verses. This is an unusually early example of the use of porcelain for preserving epitaphs. Prior to this period, epitaphs were carved into stone. In this early period, iron oxide was used to write the text, whereas later cobalt blue would be preferred. Asian Art 1509

P'u became a close friend of the artist, Wu Ch'ang-shuo in Shanghai and, as member of Wu's circle, became successful at interpreting traditional styles with a new found freedom and personality.

Donguibogam (Principles and practice of Eastern medicine), an encyclopaedia of medical knowledge and treatment techniques. compiled by Heo Jun, a Korean court physician, received a royal command to write a medical book to assist people suffering from famine, during the rule of King Seonjo (1552--1608, reigned, 1567--1608). Heo Jun himself picked the proper medicinal herbs, which were native to the Korean Peninsula. He conducted human clinical trials to test the efficacy of the medicines, and he wrote the names of the herbs in Korean so that the common people could learn them. For ease of use, the contents of the encyclopaedia were divided into five categories Naegyeong (Internals), Oehyeong (Externals), Japbyeong (Various diseases), Tangaek (Herbal juices), and Chimgu (Acupuncture). Donguibogam was disseminated as far as Japan and China and informed the evolution of medicine in East Asia and beyond.

Couplet by Han Yu Attributed to Emperor Guangzong Chinese This writing is related to the regular script style of Emperor Gaozong (r. 1127-62) but is quite different from that of Emperor Lizong (r. 1224-64). The closest stylistic comparison is a transcription of the Diamond Sutra by the Song courtier Zhang Jizhi (1186-1266) written in the same large regular script and dated 1246. While no extant work by Guangzong is known, this writing may prove to be by his hand. The couplet is taken from the poem New Bamboo by the great Tang writer Han Yu (768-824):The bamboo's lofty appearance defies the austerity of autumn,Its chaste color surpasses the lush beauty of spring.(Wen C. This bold calligraphy written by Yueshan, an Obaku sect monk, consists of five characters tentatively translated as Pine trees singing in the wind.” The line is from Cold Mountain Poems (Hanshan shi). Cold Mountain is the pen name (hao) of the poet monk Han Shan, as well as the name of a place. In one poem Han describes getting lost on the road to Cold Mountain, perhaps an allusion to the search for religious enlightenment.

The Heart Sutra, belonging to the Perfection of Wisdom (Prajñaparamita) category of Mahayana Buddhism literature along with the Diamond Sutra, is perhaps the most prominent representative of the genre. The Heart Sutra is made up of 14 shlokas in Sanskrit, with each shloka containing 32 syllables. In the standard Chinese translation by Xuanzang, it has 260 Chinese characters. In English it is composed of sixteen sentences.

Twelve Poems from the New Collection of Poems Ancient and Modern ca. 1620 Calligraphy by Hon'ami Kōetsu This elegant silk handscroll includes twelve poems from the Shin kokin wakashū, or New Collection of Poems Ancient and Modern (ca. 1206), one of the great imperially commissioned anthologies of waka (court poetry) of ancient times. During an age when there was a revival in classical Japanese court literature, this anthology was a frequent source for the revolutionary calligrapher Honami Kōetsu, who studied Heian calligraphy styles but ultimately created his own distinctive mode of writing. The poems here are drawn from the autumn section of the anthology (poems 515-526). The scroll is decorated with plant motifs imprinted by stamping, a departure from the traditional method of block-printing or hand-painting. Epitaph Tablet for Bak Eun (1479-1504), from a Set of 14 Korean. Epitaph Tablet for Bak Eun (1479-1504), from a Set of 14, 1509. Porcelain with underglaze, 9 1/2 × 6 1/2 × 1 in. (24.1 × 16.5 × 2.5 cm). When important individuals died during the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), they were commemorated in lengthy epitaphs that were inscribed on durable surfaces for posterity. This set of fourteen plaques (we are showing only part of the set) records the biography and family history of a celebrated poet, Park Eun (1479-1504), and even includes examples of his verses. This is an unusually early example of the use of porcelain for preserving epitaphs. Prior to this period, epitaphs were carved into stone. In this early period, iron oxide was used to write the text, whereas later cobalt blue would be preferred. Asian Art 1509

Poem on the Theme of Snow 14th century Mus Soseki Japanese Mus Soseki, the expert calligrapher of this verse, was one of the most influential Zen priests of the fourteenth century, having trained under the Chinese émigré Yishan Yining (Japanese: Issan Ichinei; 1247-1317). He received the special imperial designation “National Master Mus.” As a rule, Mus ’s calligraphic works are executed in an elegant cursive script, reflecting the influence of his Chinese master. The highly stylized characters in this piece suggest that Mus had carefully studied classical examples. The verse reads:From heaven fall icy petals;In the sky not a spot of blue remains.A dusting of jade covers the groundAnd buries the blue mountains.The sun rises over the mountain peak.The chill pierces my bones.Silence prevails.—Trans.
