This map was produced at the very end of the reign of the Dukes of Tuscany over the city of Florence. The splendor of the duchy is much in evidence here -- from the huge palace and extensive gardens of the Pitti Palace in the north to the imposing fortress of the Castello San Giovan Battista at the south. It was, in part, this very splendor and extravagance that inspired the brief popular revolution in 1849 in the wake of similar uprisings in France. Scaccia Scarafoni and Frutaz date publication to 1620-35; this corresponds approximately to the reign of Ferdinand II as Holy Roman Emperor, to whose legate in Italy the view is dedicated. Title in compartment at upper left, followed by 52 names of buildings and sites indexed to the view. At upper right is dedication to Johannes Vincentius, together with his coat of arms; it is signed: Gotfridus de Scachijs (i.e. Govert van Schayck). Oriented with east at top. Relief conveyed pictorially. Getty copy hinged onto heavy stock at upper edge and matted.
