Baked Pears in Duane Park 1870s William P. Chappel American Writing in the 1880s, one New Yorker fondly reminisced about the black women who stood in the streets tempting passersby with a baked pear "carried around in a deep-glazed earthenware dish, floating deliciously in a warm bath of home-made syrup." Despite the writers nostalgia, the baked pear sellers suffered the same lot as the rest of the citys hucksters—a group largely comprised of impoverished blacks and white women and children who struggled to survive in the lowest rungs of society. Saltash with the Water Ferry, Cornwall 1811 Joseph Mallord William Turner British This picture is a product of Turner's journey to the west of England in summer 1811. Saltash is an old market town in Cornwall, across the Tamar River from Devonport and Plymouth, and is the site of a centuries-old ferry service. Turner evoked the commerce at Saltash through the boats, packhorses, and people assembled along the muddy shore. The leading British art critic John Ruskin described the painting in a letter of 1852 as "what the mind sees when it looks for poetry in humble actual life." The Pellecussen Gate shown here was a medieval tower guarding the towpath along the River Vecht between Utrecht and the village of Oud Zuilens, north of the city. But Jan van Goyen places it in an invented river town. In fact, van Goyen depicted the distinctive tower at least 12 times between 1640 and 1655, always in completely fanciful settings.
