American Sioux Indians and United States Army Commissioners attend a peace council at Fort Laramie, 1868. Indians sit on the ground at left, and Commissioners sit above on benches or boxes. Generals William S. Harney and William T. Sherman are next to the right long tent stake. The photograph was taken by Alexander Gardner, ca. January-April 1868, during the treaty negotiations. The Sioux tribes involved were: Oglala, Miniconjou, Brule bands of Lakota people; Yankton Dakota; and Arapaho. A key provision established the Great Sioux Reservation which included perpetual Sioux ownership of the Black Hills. When gold was discovered there in 1875, the US broke the treaty, resulting in the Great Sioux War of 1876-77 (BSLOC_2019_9_156)

Rebel Prisoners, Gettysburg Photography Studio Brady & Co. American Publisher E. & H. T. Anthony American July 1863 Mathew B. Brady and his team of field operatives came across this trio of Confederate prisoners on Seminary Ridge two weeks after the Battle of Gettysburg. Beautifully posed by the photographers, it offers a rare glimpse of captured Confederates, possibly spies, on their way to a Union prison.

One of a series of photographs of soldiers at the 2nd K.A.R. depot in Nairobi. This photograph is a ranged group of 11 African askari and a European officer standing in front of a thatched hut. Sergeant Alex Rogers with Battle Flag, Eighty-third Pennsylvania Volunteers, Third Brigade, First Division, Fifth Corps, Army of the Potomac ca. 1863 Unknown This unusual horizontal carte de visitea period copy of a now-lost ambrotype or tintypeshows Sergeant Alex Rogers proudly posing for the camera holding the scarred colors, or flag, of the Eighty-third Pennsylvania Volunteers. He and his fellow soldiers fought on virtually every Eastern battlefield and suffered the second highest number of battle deaths of any Union regiment. As seen here, infantry flags were largemore than six feet in lengthand affixed to staffs almost ten feet tall that made them easy to rally around during the mess of battle. Their size, however, also made them targets for enemy fire and contributed to the high mortality rate of color bearers..
