Confederate General Joseph Wheeler served in the cavalry of the Army of Tennessee and fought in most of its battles. Wheeler had 16 horses shot from under him in the US Civil War. He served in the US House of Representatives from 1885 to 1900, resigning to serve in the Spanish American War (BSLOC_2019_2_99)

Union General Irvin McDowell was assigned field commands after First Bull Run. When he was blamed for the Union loss in the Second Battle of Bull Run in Aug. 1862, these ended. He continued his army career with non-battle commands until his retirement in 1882 (BSLOC_2018_6_147)

Gen. Robert E. Lee, in his Confederate uniform. March 1864 portrait by Julian Vannerson. In 1864 Lee faced a new Union foe in Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. Their battles during the 1864 Overland Campaign, (Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, and Cold Harbor) had no clear battlefield victor, but they cost the Confederacy irreplaceable soldiers and resources. In the first year of the US Civil War, Lafayette Curry Baker spied on Confederate forces for General Winfield Scott. Next, he served as Provost Marshal of Washington, DC, running the National Detective Bureau from Sept. 1862 to Nov. 7, 1863. He fell from grace by tapping the telegraph lines of Sec. of War, Edwin Stanton. He was thought to have used other irregular tactics, including, brutal interrogation techniques. In 1867, he published a popular book about his career, 'A History of the Secret Service' (BSLOC_2019_2_142)

Walter Reed (1851-1902), U.S. Army physician who proved Cuban epidemiologist Carlos Juan Finlay's theory of insect transmission of yellow fever. Reed used human volunteers, including a bacteriologist, Jesse W. Lazear who died of his yellow fever infection. Ca. 1890.
