George Crook, circa 1875. George R. Crook (September 8, 1830 - March 21, 1890) was a career United States Army officer, most noted for his distinguished service during the American Civil War and the Indian Wars. During the 1880s, the Apache nicknamed Crook Nantan Lupan, which means "Chief Wolf."

Union Admiral John Worden was a career officer in the US Navy from 1834 to 1886. As a Lieutenant he was assigned the command of the USS Monitor, the iron clad gunboat that fought the CSS Virginia in the Battle of Hampton Roads, March 8-9, 1862, during the US Civil War. General John Sedgwick was a teacher, a career military officer, and a Union Army general in the American Civil War. He was the highest ranking Union casualty in the Civil War, killed by a sharpshooter at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, and is well-remembered for his ironic last words: "They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance."
