This illustration from a photograph by noted US Civil War phtographer Mathew Brady is of General Sam Houston (1793-1863), an American frontier hero and statesman of texas. He commanded Texas revolutionary troops and captured Santa Anna at the battle of San Jacinto (1836). He was the first president of the Texas republic and later a senator and then Governor of Texas (1859-1861). The book dates to 1886.
