James Henry Lane, was leader of the Free State Party of Kansas. It was an antislavery political coalition in territorial Kansas that fought against proslavery Democrats from 1855-59. In 1859, Free-State Party formally merged with the national Republican Party and Kansas was admitted to the Union in 1861. During the US Civil War, Lane served as a Senator from Kansas.
