Air Force Releases Photo of X-3 Research Plane -- The Air Force Today (Nov. 16) released this photo of its X-3 research plane nicknamed the "Flying Stiletto" Because of its short wings and long tapered nose. The X-3 was built to test features of an aircraft operating for sustained periods at extremely high speeds. It has been flown in numerous tests during the past year. A New Fighter For U.S. Army Air Corps -- The new, sleek, bullet-nosed, low-wings monoplane Vultee's "Vanguard," a pursuit plane built under the eyes of the United States Army Air Corps which will be added to the American Aerial fleet soon. It is said the plane will approach 420 miles an hour with a 1,600 M.P. Engine, and will climb about 4,000 feet a minute to almost 40,000 feet. In Mid-Air, it will twist, roll, loop and dive better than anything Europe can offer, its Makers believe. It measures slightly more than 29 feet and has a wing span of 35 feet. A U.S. Army Air Force De Havilland Canada Mosquito which was flown at the U.S. National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) Langley Research Center, Virginia (USA), by test pilot Bill Gray during longitudinal stability and control studies of the aircraft in 1945. This aircraft was originally a Mosquito B Mk XX, the Canadian version of the Mosquito B Mk IV bomber aircraft. 145 were built, of which 40 were converted into photo-reconnaissance aircraft for the USAAF, which designated the planes F-8. 4 January 1945
