Car Kings of the U.S.A: Henry Ford II chief of the Ford Motor Company - Born in Detroit in 1917, he is the son of Edsel and Eleanor Ford; his childhood was secluded from the public for fear of kidnapping, and neither his academic abilities nor his success on the playing field was outstanding; after he graduated from school, he became a Yale student and in 1941 he started his career in his grandfather's great motor car organisation. He started at the bottom, insisting on doing the dirtiest work. Later in the same year, Ford joined the U.S. Navy, becoming Commanding Lieutenant before he was released to direct war production of the Ford motor company in 1943 following the sudden death of his father; he took up his heavy responsibilities enthusiastically, and reorganised the chief of staff during his term of Vice-Presidency from 1944-1945. In 1945 he was created President of the billion-dollar, family owned Ford industrial empire, and has gained world-wide recognition for his progressive

The young director who gets a big break in Quartet is Ken Annakin, in his early thirties, who was responsible, under Sydney Box, for The Colonel's Lady, a salty little tale about a retired Army officer's wife living quietly in the country. She produces a sizzling book Of love poetry, to her neglectful husband's consternation. Annakin, with his wide mouth puckish ears, and quaintly square spectacles has been knocking at success for some time. He equipped himself for his career partly by hoboing about the world, and by coincidence did some hiking round New Zealand and cycled across Australia. November 3, 1949.
