Sample 1883-1900 Associated Artists In the late 1870s, Louis C. Tiffany collaborated with textile designer Candace Wheeler to form an artistic decorating business known as Louis C. Tiffany & Company, Associated Artists. Within a few years, Wheeler branched out and established her own textile enterprise, known simply as the Associated Artists. The design of undulating vines, leaves, and blossoms of water-lilies on this fabric sample exemplifies the firms line of "shadow silks," a type of textile where the pattern is only printed on the warp threads. This technique was praised in an 1885 issue of Art Amateur for its ability to render "a sense of life and motion, with gradations of color instead of light and shade.". Sample 14004

Thistle in art nouveau patterns for wallpaper and fabrics. Lithograph by M. P. Eugene Grasset (1841-1917) was a Swiss artist whose innovative designs inspired the art nouveau movement at the end of the 19th century.

Fireboard c 1820 Southbury. The fireplace and hearth served as the center of eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century American homes. In larger houses that had fireplaces in more than one room, they were often ìdressed upî with paintings hung above the mantel and fireboards. The latter were especially common during the summer months, when they were utilized to beautify the gaping hole of the unused fireplace. This fireboard was painted right around 1820, when John Moseley completed the construction of a house on Main Street North in Southbury, Connecticut.. Oil on pine panel .
