Bandits on a Rocky Coast 1655-60 Salvator Rosa Italian Neapolitan by birth, Salvator Rosa spent most of his life between Florence and Rome. He developed a particular type of landscape that became especially popular in the following centuries. It is typical for Rosa to place groups of small figures, in the guise usually of bandits or soldiers, within the context of rugged and menacing landscapes. Landscape with the Penitent Saint Jerome 1515-1525 Belgium. In the 16th century, the port city of Antwerp was a center of the growing international trade in art; its artists began to produce paintings for collectors in addition to traditional images for devotional use. One new painting type was the independent landscape, an outgrowth of the lovely, naturalistic backgrounds that were one of the most admired aspects of Flemish religious paintings. Usually a diminutive religious subject occupied the foreground of these landscapes, providing an organizing principle for the panoramic view that was the pictureís main subject. Like the Museum's <i>The Burning of Sodom</i>, it illustrates the story of the family of Abraham. Because his wife, Sarah, was elderly and barren, Abraham fathered a son, Ishmael, with their servant, Hagar. Later, when Sarah bore her own son, Isaac, Hagar and Ishmael were driven away into the desert of Beersheba. For this painting, Corot chose the moment of their divine salvation. The largely arid landscape is Corot's invention, but is partially based on nature studies including the Museum's <i>Fontainebleau: Oak Trees at Bas-Bréau</i>.
