Edward Robinson. Artist: John Singer Sargent (American, Florence 1856-1925 London). Dimensions: 56 1/2 x 36 1/4 in. (143.5 x 92.1 cm). Date: 1903.Edward Robinson (1858-1931) probably met Sargent in the early 1890s, when he was the curator of classical antiquities at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the artist was working on murals for the Boston Public Library. Robinson was appointed director of the Museum of Fine Arts in 1902, the year before Sargent painted him. He would come to the Metropolitan Museum as assistant director in 1905 and serve as director from 1910 until 1931. In Sargent's portrait, the library interior and the ancient bronze mirror on the desk (which Robinson presented to the Metropolitan in 1929 (29.141a-c) refer to Robinson's career as an archaeologist and a scholar. Portrait of a Man. Artist: Gustave Courbet (French, Ornans 1819-1877 La Tour-de-Peilz). Dimensions: 16 1/4 x 13 1/8 in. (41.3 x 33.3 cm). Date: probably ca. 1862.The distinctive receding hairline and full lips suggest that the sitter for this informal portrait may be the dealer Jules Luquet, a supporter and friend of Courbet's beginning in the 1860s. In size, composition, and handling, the picture is similar to the artist's 1862 portrait of the painter Auguste Fajon (Musée Fabre, Montpellier), and it probably dates to about the same time. Courbet seems to have favored the format for depictions of people he knew well. A more loosely painted canvas in a Swiss private collection has been identified as a study for the present work. Tadeusz Reytan or Tadeusz Rejtan, rarely Reyten (1742 - 8 August 1780) was a nobleman from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He was a member of the Sejm of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth from the Novogrudok constituency. Rejtan is remembered for a dramatic gesture he made in September 1773, as a deputy of the Partition Sejm. There, Rejtan tried to prevent the legalization of the first partition of Poland
