In this striking depiction of an old woman lit by a merciless shaft of light, Borgianni offers a meditation on old age and mortality. Amsterdam of the early 1600s was a religiously tolerant city, attracting many Jewish settlers of both Sephardic (Spanish and Portuguese) origin and Ashkenazic (Eastern European) descent. Rembrandt lived among both denominations and found inspiration in the manner and dress of the Ashkenazim, who maintained traditional comportment and attire and were less affluent than their Sephardim counterparts. As a result, many of the unidentified portraits from Rembrandt's late period once carried Jewish associations, but because of a lack of sufficient evidence, those assignations have since been reconsidered. Such is the case with Portrait of a Man, which was once considered a portrait of the Dutch Jewish philosopher Baruch Spinoza (1632-1677) as well as a representation of a Jewish stude

Bust of a Man (Saint Matthias) ca. 1715-20 Giovanni Battista Piazzetta This bearded man with an axe may be identified as Matthias, the last of the apostles, chosen to take the place of Judas after his betrayal of Christ. It probably comes from one of several series of apostles’ heads devised by Piazzetta and widely disseminated when engraved by Marco Pitteri. German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Images are organized by geographic region in Italy, then by province, city, site complex and monument.

Date: 1579-82.This full-scale colored oil sketch on paper was preparatory for the head of Nicodemus, one of the bearers of the body of the dead Christ in Federico Barocci's 'Entombment', painted for the Confraternita della Croce in Senigallia, near Urbino. The altarpiece was begun by Barocci in 1579 and finished in 1582: during the process of preparation of the canvas, the artist produced a sizeable number of drawings (around fifty sheets: for this group see Emiliani 2008; Mann and Bohn 2012), including a second study for the head of Nicodemus which is now in the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. (Woodner Collection inv. 1991.182.16). As is typical of Barocci's working practice, the oil sketches probably followed the preparation of the cartoon (no longer extant) in the design process.
