Edmond Cavé (1794-1852) 1844 Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres French Cavé held the high-ranking posts of inspector and director of the fine arts administration during the reign of King Louis-Philippe. Ingres painted this portrait soon after Cavé's marriage in 1844 to Marie-Elisabeth Blavot Boulanger. It was intended as a companion to the picture of Cavé's wife that Ingres had painted a decade earlier (43.85.3). After Ingres consulted Cavé about the dimensions of his wife's likeness, he executed the portrait by transferring a drawing of the sitter (Musée Ingres, Montauban) onto the canvas.. John Haviland 1828 John Neagle The ingenious British architect John Haviland (1792 - 1852) sat for his contemporary John Neagle, while at work on the building that would make him famous. Haviland's Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia (1823-29), one of the largest architectural projects yet undertaken in the United States, was hailed as revolutionary and epochal. In this portrait, Haviland appears to be checking with calipers his innovative scheme of cells radiating from a central core; his plan would later influence prison design internationally. The watercolor rendering at right shows the neo-Gothic facade of the prison, while the book--a volume of James Stuart and Nicholas Revett's "The Antiquities of Athens" (1762-1816)--betrays his eclectic stylistic interests. Self-portrait. The English painter Charles Howard Hodges settled in the Netherlands in 1792. He became a successful portraitist and received important commissions, such as the state portrait of Louis Napoleon in this gallery. In this self-portrait, he chose not to depict himself as a painter with easel and palette, but as a well-to-do citizen. The work was presented to the Rijksmuseum by Hodges daughter Emma, whose portrait hangs nearby.

Date: 1825-28.Chinnery painted more than a dozen self-portraits, the first of which he exhibited at the Royal Academy, London, in 1798; this is the most intimate and engaging of them all. An enigmatic figure, Chinnery was eccentric and volatile, with a tendency to hypochondria, a raconteur and wit with a gift for friendship. This likeness was painted in China and must date to the years 1825-28. Its first owner was the United States consul Benjamin Chew Wilcox, a businessman in the opium trade who commissioned a full-length portrait of himself from the artist (The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd.).
