Sea Scouts on The Discovery -- The Sea Scouts stared as a girl in white house and blue slacks came aboard their training ship Discovery, anchored in the Thames. They knew that Rangers are not allowed on board, except on visitingdays, and there is rule they should never climb the rigging. But Kathleen King, 18, strode determinedly across the dock, set her cap at a rakish angle, and climbed unfalteringly to the trostlo-trees, straddling the mainmast 80ft. above the deck. Kathleen, of Weybridge street, London S.W. had permission. She said afterwards, "It wasn't difficlut, but I was nervous. I've never climbed rigging before". June 27, 1949. (Photo by Daily Mirror).

With the MacMilland Expedition in the Arctic: The "Bowdoin" the flagship of the MacMillan expedition to the far North, in an improvised dry dock at hopedale. The cargo is piled high on the foredeck, throwing stern in the air, so that a new propellor can be fitted to replace the one broken on the trip up the Labrador coast. Cutty Sark Gets Looked Over -- Officials cast their eyes over the towering, picturesque, Cutty Sark, last of the famous clipper ships, which has entered Millwall dry dock for her first survey in 13 years. If, as is thought, her hull is found to be sound and needing little attention, she will probably be preserved as a memorial to the old sailing ships, and make one more trip to a permanent mooring. March 1, 1951.

From Out Of The Past -- The old Balclutha, la of the square rigged sailing ships that carried wheat and spices around Cape Horn, is moved by tugs under the San Francisco-Oakland Bay bridle its final resting place from an Alameda shipyard where it was refitted.
