New York, New York 1901At the start in the 1901 Americas Cup Races, the “Constitution” (a sloop), “Independence” (a yacht), and “Columbia” (a sloop) are neck-in-neck. “Columbia” ultimately won the 1901 Americas Cup Races for the second year in a row, setting a new record for number of consecutive wins.

Hampshire, England. July 23, 1954 This twin-hulled sailing craft, the Eb and Flo, is expected to become the fastest in the world. Designed by naval architect Thomas Tothill, the vessel is built along the lines of a catamaran, which in turn draws its form from boats used by the Polynesians hundreds of years ago. The four ton ocean-going boat will not overturn, according to the designer. It is intended to attack the present sailing record of 23 knots.

Photograph of Maria Pujol (with sail) and Joven Elvira Near Bimini. This image is one of a set of photographs taken of the fishing vessels involved in a shooting incident 12 March near Bimini. These photos were not released as no Coast Guard action was involved and the vessels were Bahamian and Cuban. The photos were shot with a K-20 aerial camera by an air crewman, and not by one of the rated photographers assigned.
