Pilaster of Angels Sounding Trumpets from the Parapet of a Pulpit 1302-10 Workshop of Giovanni Pisano Italian The trumpet-blowing angels, heralding the Last Judgment once flanked a relief of Christ as Judge (now in Berlin) in the center. The central pilaster is composed of a compact group with symbols of the evangelists: the angel of Matthew at center, the ox of Luke at his left, and the lion of Mark on the right. The pilaster supported an eagle lectern, similar to the adjacent one, for the reading of the Gospels. The eagle of John thus completed a representation known as a tetramorph. Probably executed by assistants after designs by the sculptor Giovanni Pisano, the pulpit was finished in 1310. It was dismantled in 1603, then reconstructed in the cathedral in 1926. Allegorical female statutette of a Virtue or Sibyl mid-16th century Agostino Zoppo The open backs of this and a related statuette (1997.512) bear the remains of plaster that helped secure them, probably in niches. Pietà. Artist: Hubert Gerhard (Netherlandish, 1540/50-1621, active Germany). Culture: German. Dimensions: Overall (confirmed): 11 5/8 × 6 1/2 × 7 1/2 in. (29.5 × 16.5 × 19.1 cm). Date: after 1595.The jarring loss of Christ's arm, as well as the awkwardness of his head and Mary's right hand, was caused during the casting of this statuette in bronze. Despite the value of the easily reclaimable raw material, the Pietà was never melted down. The reason for this lies in the prestige of its artist and the beauty of his design, which endures even with the casting's failure. Working primarily in terracotta, Gerhard never cast his own bronzes. Probably trained in Florence, he enjoyed an exalted reputation in part thanks to his patrons, who included the phenomenally wealthy Fugger family of merchants and Emperor Rudolf II's brother, Archduke Maximilian III.Elizabeth Cleland, 2017. They are among the earliest known statuettes of actors and are superbly executed and preserved. Originally they were brightly painted. Date: 1st century B.C..This statuette of an emaciated woman with elongated proportions is a striking portrayal of the human condition. At first glance, she looks like an old woman, with her bony frame and sagging, ill-shapen breasts that hang above her slightly bulging belly. But her statuesque contrapposto pose, diaphanous dress that slips off her right shoulder, and the style of her hair, which is worn long and down, suggest that she is a young woman who is suffering from a debilitating disease. He keeps the head slanted aside in the direction of the left shoulder, the gaze is directed down and the face shows a left expression. The left knee protrudes above the boiler, which has a convex wall with a raised edge. In the hands of the saint, and in the edge of the boiler, there are one and two holes respectively. Bust of William IV. This is a preparatory modello for a marble bust that Xavery made of the 22-year-old Prince William IV. Three years later, it was followed by a bust of Princess Anne of England, whom William IV married in 1734. Both marble busts were placed in the Oranjezaal (Orange Hall) at Huis ten Bosch, the royal couples residence near The Hague.

His uncles objected and tried to seize the trophy from Atalanta, so Meleager killed them. Sleeping Boy ca. 1774 Philippe Laurent Roland Given the sculptor Philippe-Laurent Rolands reverence for his master, Augustin Pajou, it is no surprise the terracotta Sleeping Boy shares the vivacity of Pajous Head of a Bearded Elder (acc. no. 2003.25). A young boy of about ten years has fallen asleep in an upright position. His right hand cradles his lolling head, while the left arm hides in drapery which circles from that shoulder to the other side. The fingers sink into the fleshy cheek and displace the lips from their normal position beneath the nose. These irregularities, along with the taut sinews of the hand and slightly disheveled hair, stand out against the smooth skin of his exposed torso.The sculptors brilliantly observed, relaxed naturalism is all the more astonishing because the work was executed in Rome, where he was applying himself to rigorous study of antique art; however, James Draper, who first identified Sleeping Boy as one of Rolands three known Roman sculptures,
