Sketchbook of English Coastal Scenery William Trost Richards (American, 1833-1905). Sketchbook of English Coastal Scenery, 1879. Graphite on paper, some pages with added white chalk or watercolor on blue wove paper, 6 1/8 x 7 11/16 in. (15.6 x 19.5 cm). Richards was a prolific artist who, as a leading member of the American Pre-Raphaelites, embraced the Ruskinian principle of truth to nature. Sketching outdoors played a significant role in his quest for accuracy of representation. Throughout his long career and extensive travels, he seems to have always carried a sketchbook with him, filling the pages with drawings of the places he encountered. The Brooklyn Museum owns more than twenty-five of Richardss sketchbooks, including the ones on view here. Serving as pictorial diaries of his journeys, they also demonstrate the variety of his working methods, ranging from quickly rendered outlines to carefully modulated tonal compositions to finished color studies. Corner of a Sheet Inscribed with the Cartouche of Neferure ca. 1492-1473 B.C. New Kingdom This fragment of linen is inscribed in ink with the cartouche of Hatshepsut's daughter, Neferure. It came from a bandage used in wrapping of the mummy of Ramose, the father of Senenmut (36.3.252) and husband of Hatnefer (36.3.1). The bandage had been torn from a coarse linen sheet and was 7 1/2 inches wide (19 cm) and almost 15 feet long (455 cm). The original sheet probably came from a storeroom of goods set aside for the use of the princess. An entire sheet used in Ramose's mummy wrappings was also inscribed with Neferure's name (36.3.148)..
