Right neighborhood of a print of the scene of Cebes; Tabula Cebetis Carta Vitae. Allegory about the Salvation of Man. Life as a city with three walled sites, with a temple in the middle. At the outer gate, the souls of children are waiting, ready to enter the adult life. Before entering, they get something to drink seduction (Seductio), which makes them ignorant. The first walled terrain shows all kinds of and distractions, such as prejudice (Opinio), desire (Cupiduas), doubt (Error) and ignorance (Ignorantia). They prevent the youthful man to penetrate the next circle. Only by following the personifications from repentance (Poenitentia), hope (SPES) and good desire (Bonnem Desiderium) can manage to access the second circle. There he is taught in all forms of worldly knowledge. On the left are the seven artes liberales and on the right arguing different scholars. Man is put to the test in this circle and confronted with false knowledge (Falsa Disciplina). With the help of self-control

Accordion album; ink, light color, and gold on paper; each leaf: 26.3 x 22 cm (10 3/8 x 8 11/16 in.); painting only: 17 x 20.6 cm (6 11/16 x 8 1/8 in.). This album contains illustrations for the classic literary work the Tale of Genji, authored in the 1000s by Murasaki Shikibu, an aristocrat of the Heian period (794-1185) court. The scenes are painted in the white drawing” (hakuby?) mode, in which a fine ink line is used to depict figures and spaces with great subtlety, punctuated only occasionally by traces of red pigment for a character’s lips, a detail of a garment, or a decorative element. These two scenes illustrate episodes from the chapters Thin Veil of Cloud” (Usugumo) and Barrier Gate” (Sekiya).
