Reclining Female Nude early 17th century Domenico Tintoretto Italian Domenico was the son and pupil of the renowned Venetian master, Jacopo Tintoretto. While the influence of Jacopos rhythmical line is evident in the drawings of his son, Domenico developed an individual style of draftsmanship characterized by softer and more naturalistic modeling, as illustrated in this study of a female nude, one in a series depicting heavily foreshortened figures in various reclining poses, including several others in the Lehman Collection. These studies may have served as reference points for the voluptuous, recumbent figures of Venus and Danae that abound in paintings by the Tintoretto workshop Domenicos series of female nudes epitomize the primacy of drawing after live models in the Tintoretto workshop.. This sheet contains preparatory figure studies for a genre painting of peasants begging for alms at the door of a castle. Eastman Johnsons handling of the medium enhances his characterization: the loose, energetic quality of his line conveys the nervous desperation and bedraggled appearance of the beggars. At the outer gate, the souls of children are waiting, ready to enter the adult life. Before entering, they get something to drink seduction (Seductio), which makes them ignorant. The first walled terrain shows all kinds of and distractions, such as prejudice (Opinio), desire (Cupiduas), doubt (Error) and ignorance (Ignorantia). They prevent the youthful man to penetrate the next circle. Only by following the personifications from repentance (Poenitentia), hope (SPES) and good desire (Bonnem Desiderium) can manage to access the second circle. Date: 1745.This elegantly rendered pastoral scene was conceived by Giovan Battista Piazzetta as a preliminary study for the engraving on folio 126 bis recto of the 1745 edition of Torquato Tasso's epic masterpiece "La Gerusalemme Liberata" (Jerusalem Delivered). The Museum also owns the 1745 edition of the "Gerusalemme" (inv. 37.36.1), which was published in Venice by Giambattista Albrizzi. The scale of the figures in the drawing and the print are the same. However, the print is a more naturalistic scene with figures in a pyramidal grouping resting on solid ground, as opposed to the more decorative conception in the drawing, with figures crowded into a trapezoidal-shaped vignette supported by a decorative console.
