JAMES ARNESS (May 26, 1923 - June 3, 2011) 6' 7'' actor best known for playing Marshal Matt Dillon on 'Gunsmoke,' has died of natural causes at age 88. During his 20 years on the show, he was nominated for three Emmys. Arness also starred in the television miniseries 'How the West Was Won' (1976-1979). His last TV series was the police drama 'Big Jim McLain' (1980's). Arness also served as a rifleman in WWII, was severely wounded and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart among other decorations.
