Overlooked for centuries, his importance and particularly his accomplished, prolific output as a draftsman, has only recently been appreciated again and attracted more scholarly attention.

Date: ca. 1539-42.The Italian artist Primaticcio went to France early in his career to work for the French king, Francis I. Although most of Primaticcio's energies went into decorating the great palace of Fontainebleau, the present drawing was probably executed for Anet, the château built for Henry II's mistress, Diane de Poitiers (1499-1566). The main figure in the drawing may be Diana: although she lacks her attribute of the crescent crown on her head, she points at the crescent moon at upper left. Diane de Poitiers, was frequently alluded to through the portrayals of Diana, goddess of the hunt, and her attributes. The Virgin Immaculate and Four Male Saints (Study for The Dispute over the Immaculate Conception) 1625-1713 Carlo Maratti Italian Maratti painted an altarpiece of this theologically complex subject- Saint John the Evangelist Expounding the Doctrine of the Immaculate Conception to Saints Gregory, Augustine, and John Chrysostom-for the Cybo Chapel in S. Maria del Popolo in Rome. The work was completed in 1686, and the chapel was consecrated the following year. Another composition study for the same painting, executed in a different technique, is in the Museum's collection (inv. 63.18). In that related study, John the Evangelist stands to the right. Here, his pose has been reversed and he has been shifted to the left, while still gesturing at the open Book of Revelation held by Saint Gregory. The composition recorded in this drawing is closer to the final scheme, although Maratti introduced further revisions to the arrangement of the figures in the painting. Exaltation of the Holy Cross 1700 Antonio Puglieschi Italian At the center of the composition Christ in glory points to the Holy Cross supported by angels. In the foreground are seated, among angels and putti, Saint Peter, the Blessed Virgin, Eve, Adam, Saint John the Baptist, and another Apostle, probably Saint Paul. The old annotation on the reverse of the sheet correctly identifies the purpose of the drawing: it is a study for the central section of the frescoed cupola in the chapel dedicated to the Holy Cross and the Passion of Christ, the second on the right in Saint Frediano in Cestello, Florence.
