Edwin Lord Weeks (1849 - 1903), American artist and Orientalist, was born at Boston, Massachusetts, in 1849. He was a pupil of Leon Bonnat and of Jean-Leon Gerome, at Paris. He made many voyages to the East, and was distinguished as a painter of oriental scenes. Weeks' parents were affluent spice and tea merchants from Newton, a suburb of Boston and as such they were able to accept, probably encourage, and certainly finance their son's youthful interest in painting and travelling. As a young man Edwin Lord Weeks visited the Florida Keys to draw and also travelled to Surinam in South America. His earliest known paintings date from 1867 when Edwin Lord Weeks was eighteen years old. In 1895 he wrote and illustrated a book of travels, From the Black Sea through Persia and India.

Like other Orientalist painters, Jean-Joseph-Benjamin Constant blended European misconceptions and fantasies of North Africa and the Middle East with intricate renderings of props he gathered on a trip to Spain and Morocco. The dramatic subject, lavish interior, and sparkling colors of this painting were designed to mirror European consumers exoticizing fantasies of the region. Several decorative elements may be based on objects in Constants studio. The golden curtain, ewer, stool, and architectural backdrop are similar to props photographed there in 1890. European Art n.d.

When Eris, the Greek goddess of discord, was not invited to the marriage of the Greek leader Achilles, she threw a golden apple into the festivities, with the words 'for the fairest' written on it. The goddesses Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena each claimed the apple, and Zeus, the king of the gods, had Paris choose which one should get it. Hermes, the messenger god, acts as a guide, arranging the meeting between the goddesses and Paris. Aphrodite promised Paris Helen, queen of Sparta, if he picked her, and so he did. The result was the Trojan War as the Greeks fought to return Helen to Menelaus, the ruler of Sparta. The lush tapestries, glimmering metalwork, and contemplative warrior in this picture illustrate William Merritt Chases imagined view of daily life in the Middle East. To create this picture for a German patron, the American-born, Munich-trained Chase embraced Realist techniques popularized in Europe, as evidenced by his careful treatment of texture and light. Chase never traveled to the Middle East and instead fabricated the entire scene in the studio using a model and props. This image and others nearby reveal a tendency in nineteenth-century Western art to project Eurocentric fictitious and exoticizing views onto Middle Eastern subject matter. American Art ca. 1878
