The Unicorn Purifies Water (from the Unicorn Tapestries) 1495-1505 French (cartoon)/South Netherlandish (woven) In this tapestry the unicorn kneels before a tall white fountain that has a pair of pheasants and a pair of goldfinches perched on its edge. Other animals both exotic and native to Europe lounge about, while twelve hunters in the back of the scene discuss the discovery of their quarry. Flora and fauna play a significant role in the narratives of the Unicorn Tapestries. Plants prescribed in medieval herbals as antidotes to poisoning, such as sage, pot marigolds, and orange, are positioned near the stream, which is being purified by the unicorn's magic horn. The Entourage of Cleopatra', by giovanni battista tiepolo 1746-47. One of the most important commissions carried out by Tiepolo in the 1740s was, without a doubt, the decoration of the Palazzo Labia in Venice. Tiepolo's scenes, The Meeting of Anthony and Cleopatra and The Banquet of Cleopatra, are staged within an illusory architecture, the scenic framework lending them a theatrical character. The two female servants with the dog are typical secondary figures, used time and again by Tiepolo in numerous works to enrich the main action.

The Tupinambás Treatment of Prisoners of War.In the 17th century, Europeans were enthralled by the original inhabitants of South America. Their (reputed) cannibalism spoke to the imagination. This painting was in the possession of the Dutch West India Company in Amsterdam. Much of the scene is fantasized and says more about the Western perspective of the New World than the actual life of the Tupinambá people.
