The Lamentation of Christ ca. 1513 Circle of Hans Baldung Grien German Until recently, this drawing in fragile condition was thought to have been a study by Baldung for a painted Lamentation (Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum, Innsbruck). It is now considered a copy of a lost Baldung drawing, which presumably was preparatory to the Innsbruck painting. Design for a Ceiling: Venice Receiving Homage 1755-60 Gaspare Diziani Italian This dynamic composition, drawn in pen and ink and grey wash, has many points in common with the "Glorification of the Widmann Family", frescoed by Diziani on the ceiling of Palazzo Widmann, Venice, about 1755-1760. Banners and other military paraphernalia occur in this work, as do allegorical figures of Justice, Prudence, and Fame; putti support a tray of scrolls, and Time holds an empty shield flanked by an eagle, which may be emblematic of the Carinthian origins of the Widmann family. However, in the upper part of the fresco a winged figure crowns a representative of the family, while in the drawing a figure kneels before a personification of Venice.A group of stylistically coherent drawings by Diziani can be compared to the Museums project for Palazzo Widmann: a pen sketch for the lower part of the present composition, with a few variations, is in the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen and bears an old

On the recto, two friezes are depicted. The top frieze is identified as a Roman sarcophagus (early 3rd century AD) from the collection of Andrea della Valle. It shows a Dionysian scene with the Discovery of Ariadne, and has two masks in the shape of lion's heads. According to the inscription on the drawing, it was made while the sarcophagus stood in the courtyard of Cardinal Bruto delle Valle, who inherited the collection after the death of Andrea in 1534. The detailed annotations on this drawing may indicate that it was done during the inventory made by Gabriele Simeoni in 1557, who left discriptions of the collection in French and Italian. In
