The Young Bather 1866 Gustave Courbet French The traditional theme of women bathing attracted Courbets attention repeatedly in the 1860s. This scene revisits a motif that excited a furor of controversy when the artist first broached it a decade earlier: a realistically fleshy nude enjoying herself at a woodland spring. But by the time the present work was exhibited, viewers were more accepting of Courbets approach. One writer praised this "beautiful girl" as "health itself, with an ample and plump silhouette … one couldnt be more independent or more true."?. The Young Bather. The Source 1862 Gustave Courbet French Rejecting the convention of showing an idealized, statuesque female figure based on classical models, in this work Courbet dropped the trappings of an academic allegory or, indeed, of a picture with a high-minded pretext. His picture of a woman embracing a cascade of water may have been a response to a work by Ingres exhibited in Paris the previous year, which depicts a hyper-idealized nude holding a jar from which water pours as an allusion to spring or a river source.. Aegina Visited by Jupiter ca. 1767-69 Jean-Baptiste Greuze French Greuze insisted on submitting a painting to the Académie Royale that would gain him entry as a history painter, resulting in numerous false starts including this ambitious but unfinished canvas. It evokes the goddess Danaë, but may represent Aegina, daughter of the river god Aeopus who was visited by Jupiter and carried off by him in the form of an eagle. In 1767, Greuze wrote to Diderot that he should very much like to paint a woman totally nude without offending modesty,” perhaps in reference to this work. In 1769, however, Greuze finally submitted a different subject, his ill-fated Septimus Severus and Caracalla, today in the Musée du Louvre.. Aegina Visited by Jupiter. Jean-Baptiste Greuze (French, Tournus 1725-1805 Paris). ca. 1767-69. Oil on canvas. Paintings

Study of a Reclining Nude, c. 1841. Isidore Pils (French, 1813/15-1875). Oil on fabric; unframed: 72.5 x 92 cm (28 9/16 x 36 1/4 in.). The languorous, sensuous pose of this woman is strongly reminiscent of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres's popular paintings of odalisques, female slaves, and concubines in Turkish harems. Much of this canvas has been left thinly painted or entirely blank, suggesting that it was a figural study rather than a finished work of art. The French Academy in the 1800s viewed the depiction of the nude as the ultimate measure of an artist's skill. Because models changed poses frequently, students had to work quickly and without embellishment. Here the artist completed only those areas needed to emphasize the contours of the model's body.

A 'harem' is not a bordello, seraglio or brothel, but refers to the women's quarters, usually in a polygynous household, which are forbidden to men. It originated in the Near East and is typically associated in the Western world with the Ottoman Empire. Female seclusion in Islam is emphasized to the extent that any unlawful breaking into that privacy is haram ie, 'forbidden'. A Muslim harem does not necessarily consist solely of women with whom the head of the household has sexual relations (wives and concubines), but also their young offspring, other female relatives or odalisques, which are the concubines' servants. The harem may either be a palatial complex, as in Romantic tales, in which case it includes staff (women and eunuchs), or simply their quarters, in the Ottoman tradition separated from the men's selamlik. A hammam is a common bath house.

Date: ca. 1767-69.The young woman may be Aegina, daughter of the river god Asopus, who was visited by Jupiter in the guise of fire and carried off by him in the form of an eagle. This unfinished picture was perhaps an attempt by Greuze at a reception piece for the French Royal Academy. In 1767 he was barred by the Academy from exhibiting in the Salon for having failed to fulfill this requirement. The same year, in a letter to Diderot, Greuze wrote that he "should very much like to paint a woman totally nude without offending modesty.". Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
