Three Captives 1500-1510 Italy. Jacopo deí Barbari was an Italian painter and printmaker active in the courts of Saxony, in present-day Germany, during the early 16th century. Albrecht D¸rer met Barbari in Venice and was reportedly fascinated by Barbariís idiosyncratic approach to human proportions, which led to D¸rerís own treatise on the subject (published in 1528). For this engraving Barbari depicted the three bound nude male figures each in a different pose, showing either the front, side, or back. Artists often adopted this conceit in order to prove their mastery of the body in three dimensions. Here, the figuresí languid, somewhat attenuated physiques evidence the prolonged length of their captivity.. Engraving on cream laid paper . Jacopo de' Barbari

Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae: Man Removing a Thorn from his Foot 16th century Marco Dente Italian This print comes from the museums copy of the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae (The Mirror of Roman Magnificence) The Speculum found its origin in the publishing endeavors of Antonio Salamanca and Antonio Lafreri. During their Roman publishing careers, the two foreign publishers - who worked together between 1553 and 1563 - initiated the production of prints recording art works, architecture and city views related to Antique and Modern Rome. The prints could be bought individually by tourists and collectors, but were also purchased in larger groups which were often bound together in an album. A Study for Two Nymphs 1744-1754 France. ìI have seen enough of bosoms and buttocks,î wrote the French philosopher and critic Denis Diderot (1713ñ1784), discussing the paintings of FranÁois Boucher. What Diderot and others considered Boucherís decadent frivolity was associated with the excesses and corruption of the monarchy (Boucher was named first painter to the king in 1765). In other words, Boucherís work was seen as embodying, in aesthetic form, everything that led to the French Revolution. His style was rejected by the next generation of artists in France in favor of a simpler, more honest style inspired by ancient Rome and Greece.. Black chalk, with stumping and red chalk, heightened with white chalk, on buff laid paper, laid down on cream laid card . François Boucher

The artist experimented with metallic pigments on colored papers in his last decade, and this example appeared in the posthumous sale of his studio in 1898, and was acquired by the Museum in 1908.. Zittend naakt in geometrische zetel. This image has been inserted from longitudinal wood, making the veins of the block recognizable in the print. The presentation of a sitting naked woman is almost completely made up of horizontal and vertical lines. This structure betrays the background of Jessurun de Mesquita as a 'linear drawing' lecturer and 'the geometric ornament' around the previous century. Striking is the dramatic contrast between light and dark, an element that is inextricably linked to the work of Escher.
