Study of the Head of a Youth Gazing Upward late 15th-early 16th century Workshop of Perugino (Pietro di Cristoforo Vannucci) Italian This study of a male head, seen from below in a foreshortening technique known in Italian as "di sotto in su" (meaning from below, upward”), may have served as a preparatory study for a figure in a painting. The squaring of the sheet indicates that the figure was meant to be enlarged and transferred to a more elaborate composition. Similar types of upturned heads appear in numerous paintings by Perugino, his followers, and collaborators. It has been suggested that the drawing may be attributed to the young Luca Signorelli, who was a follower of Perugino and frequently produced heads of a similar physiognomic type and expressive quality. Head of a Young Man in Three-Quarter View 18th century Giovanni Battista Tiepolo Italian While Giovanni Battista Tiepolo is most famous for the exceptional spontaneity of his quick sketches in pen and ink with wash, he was also a brilliant deliberate draftsman, with subtle powers of description, as demonstrated by his rarer chalk drawings. His life studies, in particular, seem to convey the psychological depths of his models through their animated physical gestures and closely observed, naturalistic details. This fresh, beautifully preserved study of a young boy's head is an example of the artist's mature work in a medium he began using in 1740-43: red chalk on blue-gray paper. It is exactly comparable in technique, style, and scale to two securely autograph sheets (Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin) from the mid-1750s, which were preparatory for his famous altarpiece compositions of the Martyrdom of Saint Agatha.. Medea ca. 1715 Charles Antoine Coypel French An accomplished pastellist, Charles-Antoine Coypel used the medium not just for finished works, but frequently as a preparatory step in developing his painted compositions. The Metropolitans pastel is a study for Coypels earliest surviving canvas, Jason and Medea (Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin), which was submitted to the Académie royale as the artists reception piece in 1715. Not surprisingly, for an artist who would pursue simultaneously a career as a playwright, Coypels conception of the subject was unabashedly theatrical. Set against a curved architectural backdrop, the scene depicts the climax of the story: Medea, having committed her vengeful acts, escapes the wrath of Jason; she is airborne, gripping the reins of her dragon chariot in her left hand while brandishing a dagger in her right. Bust-Length Study of a Child Pompeo Batoni Italian 1708-87 Drawn after life, this delicate study renders the child's head and shoulders with the quiet naturalism that seems characteristic of Batoni, the eminent portraitist in the Neoclassical tradition. Born in Lucca, Batoni achieved a phenomenal international reputation as a painter, especially as a portraitist, and for decades was a prominent figure in the social and intellectual circles of Rome during the Enlightenment. The Museum owns two other drawings by Pompeo Batoni, one of which is a sheet of figure studies from the same date as this sheet (inv. no. 1975.131.5), and several canvases. The attribution to Batoni was confirmed by Edgar Peters Bowron, the noted specialist of the artist's oeuvre who edited the posthumous monograph by Anthony Clark.

Shigeru Aoki (1882-1911) was a Japanese painter famed for his combining of Japanese mythology and legends with the Western-style art movement that could be found in some late 19th and early 20th century Japanese paintings. Aoki was born into an ex-samurai household in northern Kyushu. He left his home in 1899 to pursue artistic studies in Tokyo, and soon began to accumulate critical acclaim for his artwork and its use of Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood techniques mixed with Kojiki themes. He died in March 1911 from tuberculosis, aged only 28.
