Bentheim Castle. Bentheim Castle still exists. It is located on the German-Dutch border region, but the high mountains Ruisdael depicted in this painting are not found there. Fantasy and reality are interwoven in this scene. The painter made a dozen paintings of this castle, each with a different mountain landscape. In 1816, Goethe, the famous German writer, rightly called Ruisdael a poet.
