Standing Male Nude. Van de Velde often placed his models in strong raking light, which served to emphasize the bodys plasticity. Most of his male models wear a generous loincloth, yet this model - who features in at least one other drawing - evidently did not hesitate to pose in the nude. Van de Velde does not seem to have used this study for any of his paintings.

The coal drawing shows a hunting scene, including figures, animals, and hunting gear, created around 1870.

Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae: The Farnese Hercules 1562 Jacob(us) Bos Netherlandish This print comes from the museums copy of the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae (The Mirror of Roman Magnificence) The Speculum found its origin in the publishing endeavors of Antonio Salamanca and Antonio Lafreri. During their Roman publishing careers, the two foreign publishers - who worked together between 1553 and 1563 - initiated the production of prints recording art works, architecture and city views related to Antique and Modern Rome. The prints could be bought individually by tourists and collectors, but were also purchased in larger groups which were often bound together in an album. In 1573, Lafreri commissioned a title page for this purpose, which is where the title ‘Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae first appears. Lafreri envisioned an ideal arrangement of the prints in 7 different categories, but during his lifetime, never appears to have offered one standard, bound set of prints. Instead

Hendrick Goltzius was one of many late Renaissance artists who felt compelled to travel to Italy as part of his artistic training. He went with one purposeto study antique sculpture. Goltzius made drawings on-site and then made engravings after his designs once he returned to Haarlem in 1591. He portrayed the Apollo Belvedere from a low viewpoint to capture the awesome experience of first encountering the famous monument. A seated, sketching artist emphasizes the experience of visiting, seeing, and drawing the sculpture in situ. The engraving shows to excellent advantage the virtuosic technique that Goltzius developed, in which the swelling and tapering line exaggerates the heroic musculature of the figure.
