The Death of Epaminondas. Epaminondas was a Theban general who led the battle against Sparta in ancient Greece. His death from this struggle is an episode that was seldom depicted. These kinds of far-fetched and complex compositions were popular in the early 18th century. They allowed the painter to display his erudition and his masterly command of the full range of human feelings and emotional states.

Wealth' by Simon Vouet, 1640. A large serpentine figure of a woman draped in fabric is seated in front of an imposing architectural background. She is carrying a child in her arms while gazing at another standing close by, who is proffering a fistful of jewels. At her feet, two masterly still lifes show an open book and a heap of dishes and vases made of silver and gold plate, one of which is decorated with the story of Apollo and Daphne. For this personification of Wealth, Vouet refers, like most of his contemporaries, to the Iconologia of Cesare Ripa - a work published in the late sixteenth century that catalogued the representation of allegorical figures, giving them very precise attributes. Rinaldo and the Magus of Ascalon 1742-1745 Italy. The fourth and final large narrative canvas from Giovanni Battista Tiepoloís decorative suite takes place as Rinaldo rejoins the crusader army. As a consequence, it stresses the moral element of the story of Rinaldo and Armida. The boat bringing the knight from Armidaís island seems to have just deposited him and his companions, Carlo and Ubaldo, on the coast of Palestine. Here the magician of Ascalon uses Rinaldoís shield to conjure up the heroic deeds of his ancestors, urging him to live up to their examples. Rinaldo appears more confident and mature than he does in the earlier canvases in the sequence, perhaps to serve as an example to the young member of the Cornaro family for whom the salon was splendidly redecorated..
