Musidora 1813-35 Thomas Sully American Painted in Sully's most succulent, painterly manner, "Musidora" is his only known nude. Inspired by James Thomson's poem Summer (1727), it is at once chaste and erotic, a combination that had great appeal for contemporary Victorian audiences. Sully depicts the modest Musidora at the moment her suitor, Damon, discovers her bathing in the forest. His gentlemanly conduct so impresses her that she pledges her love for him at once. The subject was painted by many artists of the day, but Sully's interpretation, in which the unwitting viewer plays the role of Damon, is compellingly unique.. Musidora. Venus and the Lute Player ca. 1565-70 Titian Italian Venus, the goddess of love, interrupts her music making to be crowned with a wreath of flowers by Cupid. An admiring, well dressed youth playing the lutethe quintessential instrument for love madrigalsgazes at her raptly. In the background nymphs and satyrs dance to the music of a shepherd. Titian painted this amatory theme multiple times. This one was left unfinished, except for the landscape background, which is fully painted by the artist. Once believed to allude to contemporary debates concerning "seeing" versus "hearing" as the primary means for perceiving beauty, these pictures seem mainly to celebrate sensual pleasures.. A 'harem' is not a bordello, seraglio or brothel, but refers to the women's quarters, usually in a polygynous household, which are forbidden to men. It originated in the Near East and is typically associated in the Western world with the Ottoman Empire. Female seclusion in Islam is emphasized to the extent that any unlawful breaking into that privacy is haram ie, 'forbidden'. A Muslim harem does not necessarily consist solely of women with whom the head of the household has sexual relations (wives and concubines), but also their young offspring, other female relatives or odalisques, which are the concubines' servants. The harem may either be a palatial complex, as in Romantic tales, in which case it includes staff (women and eunuchs), or simply their quarters, in the Ottoman tradition separated from the men's selamlik. A hammam is a common bath house.

The early 1900s caption reads: "Peace Bringing Back Plenty. in the Louvre. Elisabeth Louise Vigee Le Brun (1755-1842), also known as Madame Le Brun, was a French portrait painter, especially of women, in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Her artistic style is generally considered part of the aftermath of Rococo with elements of an adopted Neoclassical style. She gained renown in particular for her self-portraits and depictions of courtly women, especially Queen Marie Antoinette.
