Joseph and Potiphar's Wife second half 17th century Balthasar Griessmann In Genesis 39, Joseph resists the advances of his master Potiphar's wife. The Old Testament story reverses the dynamic of familiar rape scenes while retaining the titillating contrast between a nude woman and a clothed male. Here, the figure's movements are confidently handledthe flying folds of his cloak and the strands of streaming hair emphasize Joseph's panicky retreat. Detail is focused less on the anatomical minutiae of the woman's sensuous body than on rendering her luxurious bedroom fittings and elaborate coiffure.. Joseph and Potiphar's Wife. Triton the mythological Greek god, the messenger of the sea. He was the son of Poseidon and Amphitrite. depicted on the Pergamum Altar in the Pergamum Museum in Berlin. It is a monumental construction built during the reign of King Eumenes 11 in the first half of the 2nd century BC on one of the terraces of the acropolis of the ancient city of Pergamum in Asia Minor. It is 35.64 meters wide and 33.4 meters deep. The front stairway is almost 20 meters wide. The base is decorated with a frieze in high relief showing the battle between the Giants and Olympian gods known as the Gigantomachy. In 1878 the German engineer Carl Human began official excavations on the acropolis of Pergamum. The excavation was undertaken in order to rescue the altar friezes and expose the foundation of the edifice. Later, other ancient structures on the acropolis were brought to light.

Here, the appalling spectacles of Saint Daniel being dragged by a horse and then nailed between a table of wood and one of stone are presented with the full repertory of classical and Renaissance poses and gestures, richly varied. Marble sarcophagus with the Triumph of Dionysos and the Seasons. Culture: Roman. Dimensions: Overall: 34 x 85 x 36 1/4 in. (86.4 x 215.9 x 92.1 cm). Date: ca. A.D. 260-270.This highly ornate and extremely well-preserved Roman marble sarcophagus came to the Metropolitan Museum from the collection of the Dukes of Beaufort and was formerly displayed in their country seat, Badminton House in Gloucestershire, England. An inscription on the unfinished back of the sarcophagus records that it was installed there in 1733. In contrast to the rough and unsightly back, the sides and front of the sarcophagus are decorated with forty human and animal figures carved in high relief. The central figure is that of the god Dionysos seated on a panther, but he is somewhat overshadowed by four larger standing figures who represent the four Seasons (from left to right, Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall). The figures are unusual in that the Seasons are usually portrayed as women, but here they are shown as st
