Landscape with Bathsheba. Everything here exudes Classical antiquity, from the ancient fountain statues to the Classical architecture of the palace. The biblical story is subordinate to the vast panorama. Bathsheba sits bathing at lower left and is being spied on by King David, the small figure on the balcony at upper right. Even from that distance, he is seduced by Bathshebas beauty.

The Three Ages of Humans Dosso Dossi (Giovanni de Lutero) Italian The three ages of humankind are represented by two boys peeping behind a bush, by two lovers, and by two old men. The primary subject, however, is a pastoral landscape (indeed, the old men were a second thought). In Italy, the genre of landscape painting was inspired by classical literature and intended above all to delight the eye. Dossos wit, much prized at the court of Ferrara, is seen in the detail of the goats that appear to spy on the young lovers.. The Three Ages of Humans 436208

Joseph Mallord William Turner (1785-1851) was a British Romantic, landscape painter, water colorist, and printmaker. It is said that his style lay the foundation for the movement known as Impressionism. His paintings number in the thousands. Among his best-known works are A Ship Aground, The Fighting Temeraire, Arth from the Lake of Zug, and Lausanne. This oil painting, titled Tivoli, shows an imaginative classical landscape that was probably painted as a pendant to the "Arch of Constantine, Rome." It has been suggested that the phantom figures are Tobit and the Angel (according to the Book of Tobit, God sent the angel Raphael disguised as a human to heal Tobit of his blindness and to free Sarah from the demon Asmodeus). The setting suggests the scenery of Tivoli, but when Turner's imagination was fired, he cared little about topographical or historical accuracy.

The Tea-Tax-Tempest (The Oracle) 1774 John Dixon Irish This allegorical scene captures a British artists response to the American Revolution. Father Time, at left, holds up a magic lantern (an early image projector) to reveal a view of the destruction of Britain with heraldic leopards fighting. America sits in the shadows, at right, wearing products from her realm: a string of pearls, a feathered headdress, and an animal-skin wrap. Her physical separation from her companions, representing Europe, Asia, and Africa, suggests the impending imperial rupture. Using gouache paint, an unknown artist altered Dixons original mezzotint print, which depicts a hopeful resolution to the conflict, to reveal anxiety about the outcome.. Leatherstocking's Rescue 1832 John Quidor While better known for his paintings based on the writings of Washington Irving, Quidor also painted scenes from the popular novels of James Fenimore Cooper. In this episode from The Pioneers (1823), the woodsman Natty Bumppo, also known as Leatherstocking, rescues two comely young women from a female panther, which, in protecting her cub, destroyed their dog and then turned, threateningly, to them. Quidor enhanced the fantastic and horrific aspects of the story in the highly stylized setting of twisted tree trunks and roots, which take on menacing shapes.
