Jovian (331-364) was the son of Varronianus, the commander of Emperor Constantius II's imperial bodyguards. Jovian eventually rose to the same command as his father, serving under Emperor Julian against the Sassanid Empire. When Julian died from a mortal wound while fighting in 363, Jovian became emperor after others had declined to don the purple.

This illustration shows the colossal marble bust of the Roman emepror Pertinanx that was found at Pozzuoli. Publius Helvius Pertinax was a Roman soldier and politician who ruled as Roman emperor for the first three months of 193. He succeeded Commodus to become the first emperor during the tumultuous Year of the Five Emperors. Born the son of a freed slave, Pertinax became an officer in the army.

The 1884 caption for this illustration reads: Younger Gordian - bust of the Capitol Hall of the Emperors. Gordian III(born AD 225) wasRoman emperorfrom 238 to 244. At the age of 13, he became the youngest sole Roman emperor.
