Gilded 19th century replica of the Parthenon frieze. Depicting a man and a boy with a robe held between them, as two people sit and converse The Frieze was a relief in pentelic marble, created to adorn the upper part of the Parthenons naos. It was sculpted between c. 443 and 438 BC, most likely under the direction of Phidias.

Statuettes of Castor and Pollux in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY. Marble Roman, first half 3rd century AD. In myth, the twins shared the same mother but had different fathers (immortal Zeus and motel Tyndareus). Pollux was immortal and Castor was mortal. When Castor was killed, Pollux asked Zeus to let him share his own immortality with his twin to keep them together and they were transformed into the Gemini constellation. The pair were regarded as the patrons of sailors, to whom they appeared as St. Elmos fire.

Reconstruction of the west pediment of the Parthenon according to a drawing by K. Schwerzek (1896) Acropolis museum, Athens. the contest between Athena and Poseidon during their competition for the honour of becoming the city's patron. Athena and Poseidon appear at the centre of the composition, diverging from one another in strong diagonal forms, with the goddess holding the olive tree and the god of the sea raising his trident to strike the earth. At their flanks, they are framed by two active groups of horses pulling chariots, while a crowd of legendary personalities from Athenian mythology fills the space out to the acute corners of the pediment.

Grave relief. Local, Macedonian Marble. Found at Sandanski, formerly Agioi Anargyroi, in southern Bulgaria. Depiction of the busts of a family of four. The relief was discovered on a site on which a Christian church was built in the 19th century. The villagers interpreted the figures of the two children as Saints Kosmas and Damian, the Agioi Anargyroi, and incised the inscriptions next to the two children. Between them is recorded the date of the foundation of the church. The grave relief dates from the middle of the 3rd century AD.

Plaque from a Portable Altar: Christ and the Apostles, 1050-1100. Germany, Lower Rhine Valley, Romanesque period, 11th century. Walrus ivory; overall: 5.1 x 16.5 cm (2 x 6 1/2 in.). These intricately carved ivory panels once decorated the sides of a portable altar. Three of the plaques, those depicting Christ in Majesty and his apostles, were the first major acquisition of William M. Milliken, the museum's first curator of decorative arts and later director (1930-1958). As Milliken later recalled, the pieces "were immensely intriguing, monumental in scale, even if tiny in size, the Christ in the mandorla could have been enlarged and would have graced the tympanum of a great cathedral."
