Dancer Holding Her Right Foot in Her Right Hand modeled probably ca. 1900-1910, cast 1920 Edgar Degas French Upon Degas's death in 1917, more than 150 figurative sculptures were found in his studio. Most were made of fragile wax, clay, and plastiline (a wax- and oil-based modeling material). Many had deteriorated. Only a few were preserved in copies that had been cast from them in plaster. Chessmen (32) German 19th century The silver king represents Wilhelm I (King of Prussia in 1870, and in 1871 Emperor of Germany), and the queen, Queen Augusta. The black king is emperor Napoleon III and his queen the Empress eugenie. The two kings and queens are very creditable portraits, considering the scale and technique in which they are rendered. In particular, the Empress Eugenie is successful in suggesting the elegance of dress and bearing for which she was famous.

Culinary mould - Gingerbread Mould, 1870-80. This English culinary mould, made around 1875, has been carved from an unidentified fruit wood. The type of carving is called "intaglio". It was a skilled process which called for the design to be carved in reverse. This mould is interesting. because the delicate detail on the clothing is countered by the crude carving of the feet and arms. Originally, the maker intended to carve another figure and the rough outline of a man can be seen on the back. Wood used for making moulds needs to have many special qualities. They must be close grained, well seasoned and free from knots. Also they must not warp, split or shrink too much under changing temperatures and wet and dry conditions. They must also be able to cope with rigorous cleaning and scrubbing without splintering... Purchased from Edward H Pinto, 1965.. .
